If you get involved in a serious car accident, you may suffer a spinal cord injury. Even with medical treatment, these can be life-changing injuries.

You need to know exactly what options you have, what symptoms to look for and how your life could be altered forever in mere seconds on the road.

Recognizing the symptoms of a possible spinal cord injury

To help you better understand the impact a spinal cord injury has, consider the following symptoms, as listed by the Mayo Clinic

  • Partial or complete loss of movement
  • Trouble walking and balancing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Reduced sensations, such as difficulty telling if something is hot or cold
  • Loss of sexual function
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Spasms and exaggerated reflexes
  • Tingling and/or numbness in the extremities
  • Loss of coordination
  • Paralysis, often below the level of the injury
  • A back or neck that is twisted or positioned oddly
  • Extreme back or neck pain
  • An intense stinging sensation

These are certainly not all of the potential signs and symptoms, but you absolutely need to seek medical care if you have any of them or if you have another reason to believe you’ve suffered a spinal cord injury. In the most serious cases, these can be fatal injuries, even if you survive the crash. Do not delay getting medical care.

If you have been injured, what comes next?

Once you get care, you may start thinking about your future and how drastically it has changed. What should you do next? Make sure you know how to seek financial compensation if someone else caused that car accident and changed the course of your life.
